EDUCATION SYSTEM
The education system at the Faculty of Agriculture, UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta follows a Credit System and is implemented through a Semester System. The credit system includes the planning, preparation, and implementation of academic programs, with credit units reflecting the learning workload of each student.
Since every student has different interests, talents, and abilities, each student may have their own learning methods and pace to complete their study program. Students follow the curriculum set by their study program and can choose various forms of learning activities under the guidance of their Academic Advisor (Dosen Wali). Each study program offers two main learning schemes, namely the Regular Learning Program and the Merdeka Belajar–Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) Program.
Students can choose either form of learning. The regular learning program follows the guidelines stated in the Academic Handbook of the Faculty of Agriculture, while the MBKM program is managed separately because of its dynamic nature. There is no difference in curriculum between the two; the difference lies only in the learning methods, while the courses and total credits remain the same.
Through the implementation of MBKM, students have the right to study for up to three semesters outside their study program, whether within the same faculty, in other faculties, or even at other universities. The specific regulations are managed by each study program. At UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta, students may participate in various off-campus learning activities, such as:
- Internships or practical work in industry or other workplaces,
- Community service projects in rural areas,
- Teaching in educational institutions,
- Student exchange programs,
- Research projects,
- Entrepreneurship programs,
- Independent studies or projects,
- Humanitarian programs, and
- Military training as a unique characteristic of UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta as a Defenders of the Nation Campus (Kampus Bela Negara).
The Faculty of Agriculture specifically recognizes four main forms of off-campus learning activities:
- Internships or practical work in industry or other workplaces,
- Community service projects in rural areas,
- Student exchange programs, and
- Research projects.
Students receive guidance from their Academic Advisor in choosing the appropriate learning activities. If a student chooses to participate in MBKM activities, the credits earned will be converted or recognized as equivalent to certain courses or credit units according to the study program’s regulations.
The Semester Credit System allows students to:
- Complete their studies in the shortest possible time,
- Have the freedom to make academic choices within established rules,
- Develop their potential to the fullest,
- Choose their study program from the beginning of their studies,
- Decide which courses to take each semester and which extracurricular activities to join, and
- Undergo an easier and more transparent evaluation process.
In determining the study load for students and lecturers, the Semester Credit Unit (SKS) is used as a measure of learning workload per semester. It represents the total learning experience acquired within one semester. The flexibility in choosing courses and study loads means that students must take responsibility for managing their own academic progress. Academic guidance is provided by Academic Advisors to help students with academic matters.
1. Credit Units (SKS) for Lectures
A semester consists of 18 weeks of academic activities, including lectures, evaluations/exams, practicums, and research activities in laboratories or the field.
One credit unit (1 SKS) of lecture equals 170 minutes of learning per week or 45.33 hours per semester, consisting of:
-
- 50 minutes of scheduled face-to-face sessions with lecturers (e.g., lectures or discussions),
- 60 minutes of structured activities planned by the lecturer (e.g., homework, group discussions, written assignments), and
- 60 minutes of independent study (e.g., reading references, literature review, or preparation for class).
2. Credit Units (SKS) for Practicum
For activities that involve psychomotor and physical skills—usually conducted in laboratory practicums—the credit calculation is similar to lectures. One credit unit (1 SKS) of practicum equals 160 minutes per week over one semester.
3. Credit Units (SKS) for Community Service (KKN) and Professional Internship
The credit load for Community Service (KKN) and Professional Internship follows the same calculation as the practicum (160 minutes per week per semester). If the internship or training is conducted over an extended period, the SKS load is determined based on the actual average working hours per day spent by the student in the field.
4. Credit Units (SKS) for Seminar and Final Project
The Seminar and Final Project (Thesis) are mandatory requirements for earning a Bachelor of Agriculture (Sarjana Pertanian) degree. Each assignment carries a weight of 1 (one) credit and 4 (four) credits, which include research, writing, and the final thesis examination. The time allocation follows the same rule as practicum activities, in which 1 credit (SKS) corresponds to 64–80 hours of work per semester.
